we mark the passage to a different year
no means of knowing what the future says
for all we know is what we engineer
with those who leave and those arriving here
who've found their way through that most complex maze
we mark the passage to a different year
crossing over every new frontier
we find our way into the mist and haze
for all we know is what we engineer
no one will know how magics may appear
or how our rulers fill their dossiers
we mark the passage to a different year
with words and numbers we may overbear
those mortal values that we all appraise
for what we know is what we engineer
about our hearts we are too cavalier
but these are not the same as elder days
we mark the passage to a different year
for what we know is what we engineer
