if left to chance the flower would too soon fade
but each of us creates the world around
and then be hero of his own parade
too soon the truths our meagre shields abrade
no heroes seem to fight and stand their ground
if left to chance the flower would too soon fade
so many things the human mind has made
but one with history may still compound
and then be hero of his own parade
each man on horseback know's he is betrayed
by those he had once thought he would confound
if left to chance the flower would too soon fade
the bold one leads his rough hurried brigade
to charge the enemy on their last mound
and then be hero of his own parade
which one of us will one day make the grade
we do not know nor whose fame will resound
if left to chance the flower would too soon fade
and then be hero of his own parade
